Superfly (2018) Movie Review

Real Talk By: CMack The Don

The original Superfly starring Ron ‘O Neal debuted in 1972, when most of mainstream film audiences weren’t exactly as familiar with the aesthetics and style of stone cold pimpin’ as they may or may not be today.  The movie was made on a low budget but still released by Warner Brothers pictures, and had the distinction of being one of the first widely released movies with a mostly non-white production and technical team behind it. It seemed like Marvel knew this and made a movie that acknowledged how frankly ridiculous of a character Ant-Man is, and how silly the premise is, in a family-friendly action/comedy with a great cast that combined elements of Honey I Shrunk the Kids and a heist movie, and squished it all into a superhero film. There’s few superhero movies like it, and because of its humble and self-aware approach, Ant-Man really gained a lot of credibility with me, as well as a hilarious cameo in Civil War.
