The Coin-Op Question: Do You Attend Midnight Launches?

Real Talk By: KJ

It’s a hot video game release, and you simply cannot wait.  The Midnight Launch can sometimes be a unique experience.  Some retailers put on special events to cater to the lengthy crowds.  Tournaments, Prize Giveaways, Snacks and Sodas even.  This all adds to the excitement of 12:01AM hitting.  However, the digital-only age is slowly sliding in, as gamers can pre-load.   A title like “Halo 5 Guardians” is ready to go at the same time.  At least there’s more options to get the games we want.  The Coin-Op Question: Do You Attend Midnight Launches?

  1. I’ve never attended a midnight release in my life. Since most of my games are digital I have little need to leave my house to buy a new game.

I have hard copies of all of my Nintendo products, but I usually keep things digital so my kids can’t mess with my stuff.

  2. I’ve driven my younger brother to a few so he could pick up Madden games (I don’t remember which ones), but I’ve never attended personally. I’m a little antisocial and I haven’t found a game that has felt enough like a big deal to warrant such an occasion. The huge AAA games (be it Halo, Bioshock, Assassin’s Creed, whatever football nonsense) are off my radar, so I most likely miss these opportunities, On the rare occasion one of my GameStop reserves has garnered that level of notoriety, I’ll just wait later that day. Even the launch party for the PS4, my feeling was, “meh, it’ll be there tomorrow. Why hurry?”. I’m no longer that starved for new games to attend a party when it all feels the same anyway.

  3. I have gone to a couple years ago. Uncharted 3 was the last one. It was at Best Buy though and they didn’t have much special going on. I was working night shift and had the night off, so I was going to be up anyway, so went for it. Depending on my sleep schedule I will sometimes go to my local Walmart which is really close and grab a new game just to play a bit before bed. It seems that store is no longer open 24 hours, so midnight games may be done for me!

  4. Since most of my purchases are digital these days, it’s a rarity. I attended one for Borderlands 2 and another for Watch Dogs recently, because I was genuinely excited for both games (wish I would have skipped WD in retrospect). Prior to that, I hadn’t attended a midnight releases since WoW’s Wrath of the Lich King expansion and then Halo 2 before that.
