A proper sequel to Donkey Kong Country 3 arrived, and it was good. It was a long wait though. Microsoft didn’t help the situation much. They grabbed original developers Rare from The Big N. The legacy this company left was felt. During the Nintendo years, their run was legendary. The DKC series not only had great level design, art direction, and controls. Its soundtracks still have players humming this very day. Rappers have sampled the music, there have been great acoustic covers. I’m here to say Rare really put in some major work. Plenty years have passed, but finally a new game in this series would see the light. Donkey Kong Country Returns is entirely developed by Retro Studios. They successfully rekindled the magic of old, and brought in new elements. New enemies, BA silhouette stages, and great music. Even with all the new additions to the gameplay, this game feels like a smooth continuation. The difficulty isn’t child friendly at all. Returns is indeed for the hardcore. We look forward to Tropical Freeze on the Wii U. The future of DK is in the right hands.
