New Super Mario Bros. 2 Review

Real Talk By: Ms. Throwback

As we all know by now few games come close to platforming perfection as Mario Bros. With this latest edition of New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo’s handheld we’ve come to expect the very best in platforming plus even more. As I’ve said before in my reviews on sometimes that “even more” that we’ve come to crave can mean even less when it comes to Mario games. Take for example the golden raccoon in Super Mario 3D Land, (refer to my review for full details.) one item that was ment to completely innovate the game and take it to the next level, absolutely ruined the entire game for me. Giving me everything and then taking away level design isn’t what I want in a Mario game. Giving me extremely awesome platforming with new and fun aspects that excite the imagination, now that’s a Mario game. fortunately, New Super Mario Bros. 2 has the classic level design down. Apparently however they decided to bring back the damn golden raccoon, I tried to ignore that part.

I’m not going to spend a ton of time in this review talking about the things we already know make Mario great, amazing controls, pristine level design, excellent music, top-notch visuals, obsessively tweaked animation, and all the things that have made Mario great have once again made it into this version of the game. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. From the bad side it’s the same old Mario, and well to put it lightly, maybe we are sick of the same old Mario. If you’re sick of Mario then picking up this game isn’t going to do much in the way of your entertainment. From the good side though, and the way I like to see it, It’s the same old Mario with new challenges and for a fan like me and many others, that just never gets old. Fans of the Mario series will find this game once again a marvelous rendition in the Mario world and a fun new experience to enjoy.

Can we go back to the golden raccoon for a minute? Seriously Nintendo, this is a plea to get rid of that horrible item. This time in the game if you obtain the golden racoon by dying multiple times in a row, you get a reflection of how many times you’ve gotten this item on your profile. So basically it’s a negative mark saying “hey this person has this many coins but, you know, they did it by dying a lot.” So why not just take the item away? if you have to negatively mark your own item whats the point? I may have to make an entire article about this item just so I can stop ranting on how terrible it is to have in-game. I really tried to ignore it, sorry guys, moving on…

New Super Mario Bros. 2 becomes a coin collectathon like never before. Gold coins, red coins, blue coins, items and timers to turn the entire screen into coins, swirling tornadoes of never-ending coins. I dreamed about coins when I fell asleep at night. You cannot escape the coins in this game, there are literally millions of coins. I’ve never seen so many of one item to collect in a single game in my life and it’s absolutely the most fun thing ever. The game challenges you to actually collect as many coins as you possibly can and even after you defeat Bowser at the end you still want to go back and try to beat the coin collecting madness in this game.

Honestly overall this was about the hardest game for me to rate. It depends on how you approach the ever popular and fast growing series of Mario games. This is definitely one for the Mario fan but not one for the platforming fan looking for something completely new. While I personally enjoyed the game and found myself giddy with Mario fever I can see how every gamer out there might not feel the same way, thus depending on whether or not you are sick of Mario, this game could be on either end of the rector scale for you. In my opinion it’s another great Mario game, it’s not a breakthrough like Mario Galaxy but none-the-less, its entertaining. I debated taking another half off for that idiotic golden raccoon item.

When it comes to video games I've played a good many. My first system was a Super Nintendo at the age of 8 and I never looked back. Well, let me take that back, I did look back, to atari, NES, Famicom, and the rest of the systems I had missed. I became a gaming freak of nature, later working as a manager of a video game store, Game Crazy for four years. I spent my entire time there playing every current game that came through the doors and every classic game I had missed. I'm absolutely sure a good portion of my brains memory banks are taken up with the gameplay of thousands of video games and I wouldn't have it any other way. a good video game could take away all the stresses of my day and I have to say that I love being in the minority of female gamers too. It's a lot of fun to enjoy everything from Animal Crossing to Mass Effect and I'm always looking forward to what the future of gaming has in store. BRING ON THE VIRTUAL REALITY! :)
