It’s a Contradiction: UFC and EA’s Partnership

Real Talk By: KJ

At the end of the day business is business, it’s not truly personal when a bunch of different parties are getting paid. At this year’s E3, Dana white announced that EA Sports has bought THQ out of their license to design UFC games. If you can recall a few years ago, Dana approached EA to do UFC titles, but back then they shut him down.

“EA Sports told us, ‘You’re not a real sport,'” White said. “‘We wouldn’t touch this thing. We want nothing to do with this.'””You told us you’d never be in business with us. They wouldn’t even take a meeting because mixed martial arts disgusted them. This wasn’t a real sport. Boy, they got over that real quick, didn’t they?”

“I’m not tap-dancing around this thing or whatever,” White said. “I’m telling you straight-up, I’m at war with them right now. That’s how I look at it.” Dana White

At that time not only did EA cut him off, by they disowned the sport. I have a lot of love for MMA, because I truly have been watching it since the early 90’s when the Harold Howard’s and Kimo’s of the sport ran rampant.

Fast forward to this year’s E3

So I can completely understand why it happened, again its all business. Doesn’t mean I didn’t still find it hilarious, like when Rick James denied grinding his feet on Eddie Murphy’s couch.

Jokes aside, MMA was a solid game, it was certainly better than UFC 2010, but UFC Undisputed 3 was a huge leap for video games of this sport. How is EA going to replicate this. I’m sure the graphics will look fine as they did in their ‘MMA’ game, but how will the gameplay work out. If they can pick up the development team from THQ, it’s a possibility the quality will remain, but as of right now its highly unlikely.
