Real Talk By: The Ax

Metro: Last Light isn’t a bad game. It does many things right, but it doesn’t strive to make itself any different from most games today. Perhaps I’m jaded as I still haven’t played Metro 2033, but Last Light did very little to hold my attention for the 10 hours I spent playing it. There are a few things the game really does well, like the visuals and atmosphere. Then again, Rage was a gorgeous game, and Aliens: Colonial Marines nailed the atmosphere of the James Cameron film and seemed to dot every i in that respect. One could argue that in today’s gaming culture, you either make a pretty game or a great game. Metro: Last Light definitely fits in the “pretty” category. But is it great?

Metro: Last Light starts you off as the hero from 2033, Artyom. You are on a mission to hunt the last surviving “Dark One” as it allegedly is the last of a race that is the bane of human existence in post-apocalyptic Moscow. If you are confused right now, you know how I felt at the beginning of my experience. The plot quickly diverges into a political power struggle about who gets to maintain control of D-6, the underground base that Artyom and his faction, “The Order”, make their stay in. What happened to the “Dark One”? Well, looks like you are going to have to put in another 5 hours at least just to pick up where the very opening of the game leaves off. The plot of Metro: Last Light is intriguing at times, but it never succeeds to capture my imagination the way that Ni No Kuni or even Call of Duty: Black Ops II do. I can relate to Last Light in the way that I have trouble keeping on topic too. Unfortunately for those who spent $60 on this game, there is no medication to help that. Oh yeah, and there’s Nazis. Briefly.

The visuals in Metro: Last Light are hauntingly gorgeous and breathtaking, and it is very clear that the development team poured their hearts and souls into transporting you into their vision of the future. The textures are very crisp and the attention to detail is impeccable. I really felt like I was Artyom when I had to wick the blood from my gas mask after an intense firefight, and the water droplets on the mask were beautiful enough that I frequently found myself staring at the screen and then getting eaten. The game is absolutely beautiful, but every time you stop to smell the roses you end up mauled by mutants. The color scheme is very reminiscent of Fallout and Resistance, and I often forgot I was playing Metro and wondered why I wasn’t encountering and Death-claws or Chimera. The sad thing about Last Light is when I had those moments and realized I wasn’t playing Fallout 3, I wanted to quit and play Fallout 3.

If you have ever played a modern first-person shooter, you know exactly how to play Metro. There are a few intricacies though, like having to pause to charge your flashlight or pump your weapon like it’s a Nerf gun. These didn’t take away from the experience but made it all the more tense as your light is your lifeline when you are exploring the inner workings of the metro. The enemies aren’t particularly difficult, and it is a lot of fun to try to sneak around the bad guys and pick them off one by one without getting caught. However, the human AI is dumb more often than not, and sneaking isn’t necessary. Ever. I just like to feel bad-ass like Comrade Snake (that sounds awesome when you say it with a Russian accent). The mutant creatures are also fairly harmless if you know what you are doing, with the exception of one species. It’s sad when a 4-barrel shotgun can’t take down one of these things, and it really sucks when you have 5 of them chasing you into a corner and oh! Look! You are out of filters for your gas mask and you are suffocating. Or better yet, you have plenty of filters but these freaks claw at your face and shatter your mask. Good luck finding another one, comrade.

In short, Metro: Last Light feels like Doom and Fallout mixed with generic modern first-person shooters. Maybe I was upset because I was hoping to be scared. Maybe it was because I spent $60 on a game I know I will never play again. That’s not to say that Metro: Last Light isn’t worth your time; it was fun, but I felt like I was dragging the game along instead of the other way around. I felt like I was a part of the developers vision of the future, but I didn’t once feel like I wanted to be there. If you like the bang-bang-shooty-shooty that seems to plague this era of gaming, by all means pick up Metro: Last Light. If you want to be completely absorbed in a story and feel like you are actually making a difference in a fictional universe, save your money for the Mass Effect trilogy or Bioshock Infinite. Oh, and there are boobs. Just not $60 worth of boobs.

Microsoft announces the Xbox One today in a press conference showing us features like no other system to date. While some people aren’t impressed with the name I for one find it to be a good fit for the competition. With names like Wii U and PS4 the name has to be short and sweet. Xbox One is short and it says exactly what it wants you to do. Use it as an all in one console for all your entertainment needs. Lets break down the good and bad in the bullet points:

The Good:

• Catchy easy to interpret name.
• Kinect, Voice Recognition, and Google Glass features.
• Amazingly useful and simple interface. Literal flick of the wrist or spoken words work the entire thing.
• Updated sports stats in game from live sporting events. True to life in game weather and wear and tear.
• BluRay
• Amazing Hyper-visuals. Did we doubt it?
• Microsoft is focusing on exclusives with 15 titles.

Questionable:

• Are Kinect and Google Glass in the box? If so we are looking at one heck of a price point.
• Hardware looks like a Wii U except humongous! We wish they had more inspiration.
• I might use xbox to turn my tv on for another system, if i pick up my Wiimote im tempted to play it. This is a lost opportunity for Xbox.
• Hopefully xbox is smarter than Siri.

Xbox definitely took some notes from Nintendo and added some spice of their own. we still have to see how the interface and recognition work together but if they work like they were shown this is a worldwide game changer…literally. While there is no doubt about the graphical power of this generation of Xbox, gamers expect more content. Now that our eye candy can’t get much better the challenge is on. Will Xbox match our expectations? We have to wait for E3 to find out, but if the first round of EA sports titles and Forza show us anything it’s that the potential is endless. Now about that price point?

This lengthy trailer confirms the appearances of Gotham’s most notorious villains. Bruce Wayne is still adjusting to his cape and cowl, and these goons aren’t making it any easier for him. Players who pre-order now will get their hands on the Deathstroke character before everybody else. That’s right, he will be playable in all the challenge rooms, including two unique levels designed with him in mind. Were still waiting on a gameplay trailer, but this is awesome for the time being.

So along with the solo missions, Spies vs Mercenaries, an extra Coop mode will be available on launch day.

The trailer boasts 4 different game variations within coop across 14 maps. The deck continues to stack as we get closer to the August 20 release date. On a side note, thank goodness they fixed the box art.

A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a monarch or other political leader for service to the monarch or country, especially in a military capacity.  Many of the knights in gaming have their own agendas, claiming knighthood themselves and not by someone to which they answer.  Rouge knights who work for the dark side are not uncommon as are knights who choose a “take from the rich give to the poor” approach.  Whatever the scenario, knights have been as prevalent to video gaming as ninjas or zombies, and for that they deserve an article to honor their hard work to the entertainment of players and stories to which they tell.

7. The Knights of Castle Crashers

The knights of Castle Crashers are a myriad of cute little guys that pack a mean punch.  Each corresponding colored knight carries a different specialized weapon with which he can continue through the stages in a beat-em-up action packed adventure.  Players can unlock additional characters in game by competing in arena events and team up with other knights online to play cooperatively.  The big appeal of the Castle Crasher knights is their beautifully rendered art style and animation.  Each scene is filled with the knights taking out their enemies in a bloody, explosive, chaotic fashion, making for some well deserved fun.

6. The Knights of Elder Scrolls

One of the greatest things about any of the Elder Scrolls titles  is that the player can manipulate the game in whichever way they see fit.  The player themselves can create their character based around knight-like morals on their own, being honorable, religious, and protective.  Much of the high end armor in the game can be used to create any kind of knights look you desire.  From shiny gold royalty knight to dark and demonic the possibilities are endless. In game you will come across many of your enemies (enemies being a very loose word in the game depending on whose side you are on.) that have been sworn into knighthood.  The Death Knights of Skyrim can be accessed by downloading the latest update so feel free to enjoy the wide range of knights that Elder Scrolls has to offer. Elder scrolls gives players one of the only chances to experience knighthood as a female as well.   It doesn’t get much more diverse than this.

5. Link – Legend of Zelda Series

Link isn’t usually thought of as a knight but if you know the history of the series you might think differently.  In The Adventures of Link, two knights of Hyrule appear to teach Link their sword techniques.  Several comics and Manga’s also give us incite into Link’s life, his father was a Knight of Hyrule who protected the royal family and thus he is a descendant of the knights of Hyrule.  Although this isn’t mentioned outright in the games, several different games have Link obtaining magical items that are only available to the knights of Hyrule. He even encounters four Big Stalfos, transformed to enemies by Gannon’s magic,  whom he must defeat in Four Swords Adventures to return them to knighthood.  His honor to the knighthood and his service to princess Zelda make Link one of our most treasured knights.

4. Meta Knight – Kirby Series

Meta Knight is an interesting character in the Kirby series.  Players are unable to make out if he is friend or foe as his actions speak to neither side.  Meta Knight has helped Kirby by giving him invincibility candy, but then personally challenges him to battles later in certain games.  Fans of the Kirby series were excited to see Meta Knights appearance in Super Smash Brothers Brawl where he takes on his enemies with a combination of extreme speed and skill.  One of his greatest honors is that he does not take sides and players have never seen Meta Knight without his trusty knights mask.

3. Sir Daniel Fortesque of MediEvil

Sir Daniel Fortesque, a skeletal knight, graces us with his presence through the world of MediEvil.  Brought back to life by an evil sorcerer, Sir Dan uses a variety of short and long range weapons to help him on his quest.  If no weapons are available Sir Dan also has the unique ability to rip his own arms off and wield them as weapons.  Dan is a knight that has experienced a second chance at life….I mean, death.  He was in fact, struck down by the very first arrow fired in a battle he waged.  Due to his life’s failures Dan has been unable to make it into the hall of heroes, determined to change this fact Dan vows to take down the evil king and earn his rightful place.

2. Siegfried Schtauffen – Soul Calibur Series 

Siegfried is the offspring of a revolutionary father from the 16th century.  His father, who was a veteran of the service, spend 15 years teaching his son the techniques of swordsmanship and battle.  After his father leaves for war, Siegfried joins a band of thieves who decide to take out a battalion in the night.  Successful in their endeavor Siegfried kills the commander only to realize that it is his very own father whom he has decapitated.  Siegfried retreated to the woods where he became more insane and obsessed with finding the soul edge sword which he convinced himself was the reason his father was killed.  After sneaking into battle and slaughtering thousands the sword transforms him into the Azure Knight, Nightmare.

1. Tanooki Mario Knight

One of our favorite Mario power-ups is the Tanooki suit which allows Mario to fly through the air, glide more slowly to the ground, and as many forget turn into stone knight Mario.  Turning into the stone knight has several advantages, allowing Mario to shield himself from enemies and if he chooses to turn into the knight while in the air, comes crashing down on the head of his enemies in a thwomp fashion.  Leave it up to Mario to be a super-hero-flying-racoon-stone-knight with a mustache.  I’m sure no one else does knighthood quite like Mario.

This week’s Trailer of the Week is the Batman: Arkham Origins teaser! We don’t get to see much, but what’s there has us already excited for this October. As you may have guessed, Arkham Origins is a prequel to Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, taking place “before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains and assassins” with a Batman that is “young, raw, and unrefined”. We are looking forward to learning more as new trailers are released in the coming months!

The best Resident Evil since number 4 is coming home.Revelations puts players into level one of the game. Jill is on board an abandoned ship in search of Chris Redfield. Right away you can see the difference between the 3DS to Wii U visuals. While this was always a great looking title, HD is only doing this game more favors. The main creatures look extra nasty (and shiny too). Players can experience this on the gamepad, or both.

When playing with the TV on, the gamepad acts as a map, and a really convenient way to navigate through items. this is an issue that usually plaques the series. It’s almost non-existant now. Great to see advantages that the 3DS version had were carried over.

More additions to this version include connectivity bonuses by linking your game to ResidentEvil.Net. Players will be able to unlock in-game extras by doing so. A new enemy was put into the game, and a harder difficulty mode known as “Infernal” will give everyone more of a challenge.

Raid mode returns along with the online coop. Rachel and Hunk have been added to the roster of playable characters this time around. This port doesn’t simply feel phoned in. The added bonuses, and visuals have peaked our interest. Will you take the plunge again?
