Hey this is Trucker Ninja, today were going to take a look at star trek online. First off I have been a trek fan growing up with mediocre games, that just have the name and a few elements from the franchise. Safe to say i’m picky when it comes to my Trek. So this game takes place after Voyager (first mistake, implied same time line that’s another nerd problem ). Moving on.
You start out as an ensign on-board a ship you name, and some issues happen. You must become the ranking officer. So you get to command a star ship, (hell yeah right ) get tossed into an encounter with the federations worst enemy the Borg. After you battle for about 5 mins, the player will have to do some time on an away mission. The mode has phasers set to mediocre. It’s a sad attempt to turn into a 3rd person shooter with glitchy graphics.
Honestly, after going through the tutorial, i had a bad feeling that this game is really going to leave a stain on the franchise. Cryptic studios really dropped the ball on this game. This title had some things going for it like the ship to ship battling. It’s cool to watch for about 5 mins, but you can only watch phasers and torpedoes launch so much. For a game that runs on a computer the graphics are kinda 2004. The player could traverse over 40 different worlds and the only thing that changes is the color of the dirt. Also, look at 100 different people and notice the face generator is a throwback model. Only thing that gave me the power to open my wallet and dish out 15 bucks a month was the established franchise name.
If you’re looking for something that takes up 13 gigs on your computer and a membership fee for 15 bucks a month, you might get a few kicks out of it but for a real MMORPG pass on it. A Socially weak experience too. No one talks to each other, and fleet management (guilds) are poorly conceived. At least it’s not 60 bucks to buy the software anymore. Today January 17, 2012 it becomes free to play. Is it really free? You will have limited access kinda like EQ live. So its pretty much pay to win. Oh and forget about the people who paid for lifetime subs over 200 bucks they get cute little perks. That’s not legit. I feel as if DCU took more advantage of the FTP edict than this Trekkie game.
When looking for a MMORPG buy the real franchise’s World Of WarCraft and EverQuest. No love for a company who does not share the love to fans. If you plan on playing for free, make it DCU. Trucker ninja, rolling out.
